RemNote's integration of notes and flashcards is the thing it does better than anything else in this comparison. You write a note, mark a piece of it as a cue, and the card enters a review schedule without leaving the app. Students report this as the reason they stay, and PDF annotation plugs into the same loop.

Measured on a 2,000-file, 55 MB vault on Apple silicon: cold index 1.07 s, full-text search 1.8 to 6.6 ms, wikilink autocomplete under 0.5 ms, backlink lookup 0.65 µs, graph snapshot 10 ms, keystroke latency 0.1 ms in a 1 MB note. A 300 MB file is open in under a second.

RemNote has a genuinely generous free tier, Pro at $8 a month annually or $10 monthly, and a one-time Life-Long Learner licence at $395. That last option is unusual in this category and worth knowing about, because it caps your exposure. Sync is cloud-native and included.

Valutorio's sync is an optional subscription, so the app and the syncing are two separate decisions. Buy the app and local vaults work forever. Add the subscription and the vault moves between Macs in the background, encrypted in transit and at rest, at 0.56 s a cycle with nothing to configure. When two machines edit the same note, three tiers run automatically: three-way merge, then markdown-aware keep-both blocks, then keep-both artifacts. A conflict marker never appears inside a note, and no conflicted copy appears in the folder.

RemNote's free plan covers a lot, Pro is $8 a month billed annually or $10 monthly, and the Life-Long Learner licence is a one-time $395. Four years of Pro is around $384, so the lifetime option roughly pays for itself at that point. Valutorio is a paid Mac App Store app at a price I cannot state, because it is not fixed, and sync between Macs is a further optional subscription I cannot price either. RemNote has the better cost story here, including a free tier Valutorio does not have.
