Valutorio vs Microsoft OneNote: Markdown instead of .one (2026)

OneNote's page is freeform. Text boxes go where you put them, ink goes over the top, an image lands beside a table, and nothing snaps to a document flow. For lecture notes, whiteboard captures, and marked-up diagrams that beats a markdown file and it is not close. Handwriting and mixed media are first-class here.

Valutorio has none of that. A note is a markdown document with a source view, a preview, and a minimap. No ink, no free placement, no drawing layer. If your notes are visual, this comparison ends here in OneNote's favour.

OneNote content is stored as .one sections in OneDrive. There is no markdown support at all. Getting content out means exporting to PDF or copying pages into something else, and either route loses structure. Search is fine inside OneNote and useless outside it, because your disk holds a proprietary blob where the text should be.

A Valutorio vault is a folder of plain markdown files, one per note. Nothing is imported on open and nothing is converted. Spotlight and ripgrep read the same bytes the app does. Uninstall Valutorio and every note is still there in a format that has been readable by everything for twenty years.

OneDrive sync is automatic and required on Mac and mobile. You get no merge you control, because the merge happens inside Microsoft's service on a format you cannot read.

Conflicts run through three tiers automatically: three-way merge, then markdown-aware keep-both blocks, then keep-both artifacts. Conflict markers never appear inside a note, no conflicted-copy file is created, and a sync killed halfway repairs itself. Cancel the subscription and the vault is still a folder of markdown you can read and copy by hand.

OneNote organises by notebook, then section, then page. That works at course-notebook size and becomes sprawl at knowledge-base size, which is a documented weakness. OneNote has page links but no backlinks and no graph, so nothing shows you what refers to the page you are on. The Mac version is also widely criticised as the weaker sibling of the Windows one, which matters if the Mac is your main machine.

Valutorio is a native macOS app, Swift and AppKit over a Rust engine, with no Electron. On a 2,000-file, 55 MB vault on Apple silicon it indexes cold in 1.07 seconds, answers full-text search in 1.8 to 6.6 ms, resolves a backlink in 0.65 microseconds, and snapshots the graph in 10 ms. A 1 MB note takes keystrokes at 0.1 ms latency and a 300 MB file opens inside a second. Backlinks arrive with context and the graph filters.

OneNote is free and generous, with the advanced and AI pieces sitting behind Microsoft 365 at roughly $5 to $15 per user per month, and Microsoft has announced 2026 price increases on that packaging. Valutorio is a paid Mac App Store app, with Valutorio Sync as an optional subscription if you want two Macs in step. If your notes are ink and images, OneNote's free tier is unbeatable value. If they are text you expect to keep for a decade, the question is what a proprietary .one file in OneDrive is worth to you against a folder of markdown on your own disk.
